Definition of the P0441 code
The diagnostic trouble code P0441 is set when a fault is detected in the EVAP control circuit. This code can be seen with other EVAP system codes.
What the P0441 code means
The P0441 code appears when the ECU has detected a faulty purge flow in the evaporative emission control system (EVAP). If a faulty purge flow is detected, the Check Engine light will illuminate on the instrument panel. The ECM uses a vacuum switch to detect the purge flow from the EVAP canister.

- Use the check tool to check the fuel tank pressure data for possible faults.
- Check and test the fuel tank cap.
- Again, use a scan tool to check the vacuum switch and bleeder valve for proper operation.
- If none of the above tests give a conclusive answer, then a smoke test will be performed to check for leaks in the EVAP system.
Most common errors when diagnosing P0441 code
The most common errors are usually due to neglecting basic elements or skipping steps during diagnosis. In some cases a smoke test may be required, which should be done with a gas tank between 15% and 85% to guarantee results.
Although the fuel cap is the most common cause of P0441, it should be checked and tested. Gas caps can be tested with manual vacuum testers or with a smoke test, which can detect any leaks in the gas cap when run.
How serious is the P0441 code?
P0441 is not usually a serious code. The Check Engine light is usually the only symptom you experience. When the Check Engine light comes on, in many states the vehicle will fail the OBD-II emissions test. EVAP problems may be accompanied by a slight fuel odor that may bother some people.

This should not be done on a completely empty or completely full tank.
