What code P0421 means
The P0421 code means that the powertrain control module senses that the catalytic converter system is not working as it should during warm-up. This period covers the time from the first start of the vehicle until about five to ten minutes later.
The powertrain control module uses the data received from the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors and compares the two readings. If the two readings are identical or very close, the Check Engine light will come on and the code P0421 will be stored. If this problem occurs only during the warm up period of the vehicle, the P0421 code will be recorded.
