What does code P0410 mean?

What causes code P0410?

• The air intake to the air injection system is blocked, resulting in a low exhaust airflow.
• O2 sensors are slow to respond to increased O2 in the exhaust gas.
• The catalytic converter is partially clogged, increasing exhaust gas back pressure.
• The air injection pump contacts do not make contact.

What are the symptoms of code P0410?

• The engine light will come on, and the code will be stored in the ECM memory and in the freeze frame.
• The air injection system pump may be noisy due to damaged bearings.
• The engine may run too rich if excess O2 is pumped into the exhaust system.

How can a mechanic diagnose a P0410 code?

• Scan the codes and document the freeze frame data to verify the problem.
• Clear the engine codes and recheck that the air injection system is working properly.
• Repair all O2 sensors or other engine codes before proceeding to diagnose code P0410.
• Monitor the O2 pid sensor on the scanner to see if the sensor responds when the air injection pump is on, the sensor should pass within 150 mv in 3 seconds.
• Replace the free O2 sensor and recheck the system.
• Check the air injection relay for power to the relay if the pump does not turn on.
• Check the air injection pump to see if there is adequate resistance between the power and ground contacts.

Most common errors when diagnosing P0410 code

• Failure to check the inlet air flow to the air injection pump before replacing it so that no air leaks from the pump.
• Failure to check the air injection pump relay for burnt electrical connections before replacing the defective air injection pump.

How serious is code P0410?

• The air injection pump system is supposed to help reduce emissions and can cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test.
• A check engine light that comes on causes the vehicle to fail an emissions test.
• The air injection pump should not cause any driving symptoms other than the check engine light coming on.
