P0332 Code Definition
If the shock combustion sensor 2 circuit gives a low input signal, the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) registers the P0332 code and turns on the Check Engine light.
What the P0332 code means
The purpose of the combustion sensor is to signal the PCM when the engine starts to ping. If the PCM receives a combustion sensor reading that is too low, it will not be able to send the correct ping signal, and the PCM will not be able to correct the problem. This can result in increased emissions and other problems for the engine.
What causes the P0332 code?
When the P0332 code is recorded, the most common causes are:
- Defective knock combustion sensor
- Fault in the knock sensor circuit or its connectors
- Air/fuel ratio too poor
- Cooling system problem
- Defective EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system.
What are the symptoms of code P0332?
In some rare cases, there will be no symptoms other than the Check Engine lights coming on. In most cases, however, you will see one or more of the following symptoms:
- Engine whistle when accelerating.
- Increased engine heating during normal operation.
- Lack or loss of power
How can a mechanic diagnose a P0332 code?
After checking the code with an OBD-II scanner, the mechanic will start by visually inspecting the sensor and its circuitry. Then he will probably use an ohmmeter and other diagnostic tools to test the circuit, connectors and other related components.
After each test and/or repair, they will erase the PCM code and retest the system by starting the vehicle. In some cases, they will perform a short or long test to make sure there is no intermittent problem that needs to be fixed.
Common P0332 code diagnostic errors
The most common errors associated with this code are related to failure to check and diagnose the root cause of the problem. In some cases, the knock sensor is replaced when the problem was actually the wiring or connectors. In other cases, the problem may be related to the cooling system or the EGR system, in which case replacing the knock sensor will not solve the problem.
How serious is the code P0332?
Engine ping can seriously affect the engine’s ability to run cleanly and efficiently. If the knock combustion sensor is malfunctioning, the PCM cannot get adequate information from it to predict and correct the problem. This can lead to an engine that runs poorly, overheats, has lower fuel efficiency, and other problems as well.
What fixes can repair a P0332 code?
Some of the repairs that most often fix the P0332 code are:
- Replacement of worn or damaged wires and connectors in the sensor circuit.
- Make sure the sensor and circuit are properly grounded.
- Replace knock combustion sensor
- Remove the cause in the EGR or cooling system
- Replace or reprogram the PCM (rarely)
Additional notes to consider regarding the P0332 code
Even if you do not notice any other problems or symptoms with your vehicle, the P0332 code will cause the Check Engine light to come on. If this light comes on during an OBD-II emissions test, the vehicle will not pass the test. In most states and with most vehicles, this means that you will not be able to legally register your vehicle or renew your registration. Resolving this problem early can prevent many headaches, as well as more complicated and expensive repairs down the road.
