What does the P0011 code mean

P0011 is a generic OBD-II code that indicates that the engine control module (ECM) has determined that the intake camshaft in bank 1 is more advanced than the ECM told it to be. This overrun condition can occur when the camshaft is either overrun or lagging.

What causes the P0011 code to occur?

• The crankshaft and crankshaft sensors indicate that the crankshaft is further forward than the ECM command.
• The camshaft is too far forward when the ECM commanded to move the camshaft back to a lower timing level.
• The camshaft oil control solenoid on bank 1 may be blocked or have clogged wires.
• The oil is too thick and the threads are clogged due to lack of oil flow to and from the camshaft phasers.
• The camshaft phasers are stuck in the forward position.

What are the symptoms of code P0011?

• The ECM will turn on the check engine light and instruct the camshaft, if possible, to move to its normal starting position.
• The engine may have difficulty starting if the cam is stuck in a timing position that is too advanced or retarded.
• The engine will have reduced fuel mileage because the camshafts are not in their optimal positions for the best fuel mileage.
• Depending on the camshaft position, the engine may run unevenly, hesitate, or stall.
• Engine emissions may exceed federal levels and fail an emissions test.

Note: Symptoms may change depending on the timing position when the camshaft has stopped moving forward or retracting.

How can a mechanic diagnose the P0011 code?

• Visual inspection to determine any problems with the electrical connector, wiring, or the oil control valve on the bank 1 intake camshaft.
• Check that the engine is filled with clean engine oil of the correct viscosity.
• The technician scans and documents the codes received and reviews the freeze frame data to see when the code was set.
• You will then need to reset the codes to clear the OBD-II error codes and retest the vehicle to see if the P0011 code returns.
• If the code returns, then the next step for the technician to take is to perform a manufacturer-specific spot test for the P0011 code and repair if necessary.

Note: Follow the manufacturer’s recommended spot test to reduce the problem, as each engine may be tested differently and there may be possible internal engine damage if the tests are not performed according to the correct procedure.

Common errors when diagnosing P0011 code?

Follow these simple tips to avoid errors:

1. Always perform a visual inspection for common problems, such as checking that all electrical connectors are connected.
2. Check that the engine oil is full, clean, and of the correct viscosity.
3. Check, document, and clear trouble codes. Check if the code reappears before performing further tests.
4. The manufacturer’s test procedures should be performed step by step, without skipping any steps, to avoid misdiagnosis and replacement of good components.
5. Do not replace any sensor or component unless testing indicates a problem.

How serious is the P0011 code?

• The engine may run erratically and stagger, hesitate, run erratically, or have difficulty starting.
• Depending on the faulty camshaft position, excessive fuel consumption, carbon deposits on engine components and various driving discomforts may occur.
• Driving a car for a long period of time with the camshafts not advancing or retracting can cause other problems with the camshaft or engine, depending on the cause of the failure.

What fixes can clear the P0011 code?

1. Reset the error codes and perform a road test.
2. Change the oil and filter to an oil with the correct viscosity for the engine specification.
3. Repair or replace the wiring for the oil control valve on the bank 1 intake camshaft.

The engine oil passages through the camshafts and oil control valves are of a special size and only oil with the viscosity recommended by the manufacturer should be used. If too thick or too thin oil is used, the camshafts cannot change camshaft advance as intended by the manufacturer and can cause premature damage to the camshaft and related engine components due to lack of proper lubrication.
